Recommended Parvo Testing:

CBC/BIOCHEMISTRY/URINALYSIS - Neutropenia (typically severe) and lymphopenia are common. Elevated liver enzymes, hypoglycemia, panhypoproteinemia, azotemia, electrolyte imbalances, and evidence of multi-organ involvement may be seen on chemistry. Generally a urinalysis presents as normal. In severe cases multiple blood tests may be required to re-evaluate the organs, electrolytes, and glucose levels.

OTHER LABORATORY TESTS AND IMAGING - Survey abdominal radiographs to evaluate for possible foreign body or intestinal obstruction. Abdominal ultrasonography may show enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes (rarely) and distended, fluid-filled intestinal loops. These are mainly performed to rule out other disease.

DIAGNOSIS OF PARVO - Signalment, history and physical examination findings give clinical suspicion. Fecal ELISA—for parvoviral antigen is the most commonly used test. False-negatives may be seen due to relatively short time of viral shedding. Concurrent complete blood count may show leukopenia and neutropenia. Real-time PCR has recently shown to be highly sensitive and specific. Other less commonly used tests—virus isolation, electron microscopy, tissue culture, and serology for hemagglutination inhibition. The fecal Parvo ELISA test can be performed in a few minutes at Scottsdale Veterinary Clinic.
